"CATTAIL POND"
Artist: TONI WEIDENBACHER

Description: I was inspired by the beautiful Catskill Cats to construct and paint my own pair of beavers which are currently on display at the Varga Gallery in Woodstock. I would like to paint the cat using the motifs used on the beavers to create an aquatic, environmental theme to go with the title of Cattail Pond.

About the Artist: Since I was a little child I have always been involved with both the worlds of nature and painting. I was fortunate to have spent much of my childhood in the country. I graduated from the State University at New Paltz and began my career teaching at a private school allowing me to spend many hours taking children on mini field trips to observe and explore local habitats and to include drawing and painting in the curriculum. I was twice selected to present at the Ashokan field campus demystifying painting and drawing nature to other teachers. When I learned to kayak five years ago, it opened a whole new way of relating to our beautiful region. I hope my cat, besides giving pleasure will encourage people to look more closely at the world around them and see the wonderful, complex world of nature.

Description: Inspiration: The many fishermen of the Catskill area!

About the Artist: As a growing artist, I am always looking for opportunities to create interesting art. I believe Cat'n Around Catskill would be something I would find a passion in. I have two cats of my own that frequently make their way into my art. I understand their beautiful form and amazing personalities. I am currently an Art Education Student at SUNY New Paltz and hope to spread my love of art and creativity to others. My main interest in digital and black and white photography has lately branched out into painting and sculpture. I enjoy creating anything beautiful, fun, interesting or sometimes silly. I look forward to applying these attributes to one of Catskill's Cats!

"YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT"
Artist: NANCY ESTES

Description: As a former biology teacher, I am well aware of the role nutrition plays in creating body structures. After watching one of my cats devour an entire large rodent, the phrase "You are what you eat" came to mind. I thought it might be amusing to create a cat made up of things that cats consume: wild, purchased or even passed from the table by loving owners. I will insert a Plexiglas window in both sides of the standing cat and fill the body cavity with empty food containers etc. The outer surface will be covered with decoupage labels and pictures of things cats might eat. About the Artist: Nancy Estes is an amateur, self-taught multi-media artist. She is a retired public school teacher with 33 years experience in teaching Biology. While in the classroom, she made countless teaching displays and learning tools for her students, which gave her hands-on experience in a variety of artist's media. Ms. Estes lives on a small farm in Columbia County with her husband where she teaches children horsemanship, and volunteers for various equestrian organizations.
